William G Hamlin State Statistician For the PDF version of this report, go to the following address: http://www.agr.state.ne.us/agstats/agrifact/agf0222.pdf ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NEBRASKA NOVEMBER 1 CROP REPORT Nebraska's 2002 corn crop is forecast at 927 million bushels, up 2 percent from last month but 19 percent below last year's final output and the lowest production since 1995 Average yield is forecast at 122 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels from October but 25 bushels below last year's record high and the lowest since 1995 Acreage to be harvested for grain remained at 7.6 million, down 2 percent from last year. Soybean production is forecast at 179 million bushels, up 3 percent from last month but 20 percent below last year Yield is forecast at 38 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from last month but down 7.5 bushels from 2001 Acres for harvest, at 4.7 million, were unchanged from last month and are the second highest on record. Sorghum production is forecast at 15.2 million bushels the lowest since 1956 Yield is forecast at 49 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels from last month and the lowest since 1974. U.S NOVEMBER 1 CROP REPORT U.S corn production is forecast at 9.00 billion bushels, up slightly from last month but down 5 percent from 2001 Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 127.6 bushels per acre, up 0.4 bushel from October but down 10.6 bushels from last year Acreage harvested and to be harvested for grain is forecast at 70.5 million acres, unchanged from October but up 3 percent from 2001. Soybean production is forecast at 2.69 billion bushels, up 1 percent from October but 7 percent below 2001 Yields are expected to average 37.5 bushels per acre, up 0.5 bushel from last month Acreage for harvest is estimated 71.8 million acres, unchanged from last month. Sorghum grain production is forecast at 381 million bushels, down 1 percent from October and down 26 percent from 2001 The U.S yield forecast at 50.7 bushels per acre, is down 0.7 bushel from October and down 9.2 bushels from last year. Source: USDA NASS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHERE IS U.S. AGRICULTURE HEADED? Help this year's Ag Census provide the answers. By Bill Hamlin, State Statistician, USDA NASS, Lincoln, NE What is the best source of uniform, comprehensive, consistent, county, state and national facts about the nation's agriculture? Answer - The Census of Agriculture Please help us make this year's Census of agriculture for Nebraska the best ever by responding and encouraging response. In late December USDA's National Agriculture Service will launch the 2002 Census of Agriculture More than 60,000 Nebraska operations and nearly 3 million nationwide will receive report forms They will be asked to return them by February 3 next year. My office, USDA's Nebraska Agricultural Statistics Service in Lincoln, will handle all follow up data collection, review, and analysis of data for Nebraska Results will be available in February 2004. Farmer and rancher participation is vital to success of the agricultural census Response is required by law but the same law provides that individual reports be kept confidential (Title 7, U.S Code). Statistical results are summarized and published only in geographical totals to prevent identification of individual producers We are targeting a 90 percent response. A national census of agriculture was first taken in 1840 and every ten years thereafter until 1920 Currently, the census of Agriculture is on a five year cycle for years ending in 2 and 7 The last census and the first conducted by USDA was for 1997 This will be the 26th ag census and the next one will take place for 2007. In 1850, before Civil war clouds were brewing, the U.S Dept of Interior conducted the second Census of Agriculture in conjunction with the seventh Census of population That census showed the United States had 1.7 million farms averaging 203 acres But only 78 acres were improved Numbers of farms in the country peaked at 6.8 million in 1935 and were down to 2.8 million in 1997 What will the number be for 2002?
