Hamlin State Statistician ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stocks of Grain and Hay Corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2002, in Nebraska totaled 856 million bushels, down 18 percent from last year and the lowest December total since 1995. Wheat holdings totaled 52 million bushels, down 18 percent from a year ago and the lowest total since 1997. Soybean stocks totaled 143 million bushels, down 15 percent from last year and the lowest since 1999. Hay stocks on Nebraska farms totaled 3.4 million tons, down 29 percent from last year and the lowest total since 1957. United States corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2002 totaled 7.63 billion bushels, down 8 percent from December 1, 2001. Wheat stored in all positions totaled 1.32 billion bushels, down 19 percent from a year ago. Soybean stocks totaled 2.11 billion bushels, down 7 percent from December 1, 2001. Sorghum stocks totaled 230 million bushels, down 27 percent from a year ago. Hay stocks stored on farms totaled 104 million tons, down 6 percent from the previous year. Storage capacity for these facilities totaled 690.4 million bushels up slightly from a year ago. In the United States, off-farm grain storage facilities totaled 9,521 on December 1, 2002, down 2 percent from December 1, 2001. Capacity of off- farm commercial grain storage totaled 8.51 billion bushels, on December 1, 2002, up 1 percent from December 1, 2001. The United States on-farm storage capacity totaled 11.2 billion bushels on December 1, 2002, up slightly from December 1, 2001. Seeding was underway by the first of September. Minimal rainfall allowed seeding to progress at a near normal pace.
