Hamlin State Statistician ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mid-Year Acreage Highlights As of June 1, Nebraska corn growers planted 8.0 million acres in 2003, down 5 percent from last year and 1 percent below 2001. An estimated 7.65 million acres will be harvested for grain, an increase of 4 percent from 2002. Nebraska soybean producers planted 4.7 million acres, unchanged from the previous year and equal to the second highest of record, but 5 percent below the record high of 4.95 million set in 2001. Last fall, winter wheat was sown on 1.8 million acres, up 9 percent from a year earlier and the largest acreage in four years. Sorghum growers planted 650,000 acres for all purposes, up 44 percent from last year, and 18 percent above 2001, and the largest total in five years. Alfalfa hay acreage for harvest, at 1.45 million acres, is up 7 percent from last year while other types of hay cut are down 3 percent. Oats planted at 195,000 acres are up 11 percent from 2002. Dry edible bean producers planted 160,000 acres, down 14 percent from a year earlier. Sugar beet plantings of 39,800 acres are down 30 percent from 2002. Source: USDA NASS Acreage June 30, 2003. Grain Stocks Nebraska corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2003, totaled 357 million bushels, down 15 percent from June 1, 2002. Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 39 million bushels, down 28 percent from last year. Wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2003 totaled 16.8 million bushels, down 50 percent from a year ago. U.S. corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2003, totaled 2.98 billion bushels, down 17 percent from June 1, 2002. Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 602 million bushels, down 12 percent from last year. All wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2003, totaled 492 million bushels, down 37 percent from a year ago. Source: USDA NASS Agricultural Prices, June 27, 2003. Hogs and Pigs Nebraska inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2003, was 2.95 million head. This was unchanged from June 2002 but 2 percent above March 1, 2003. Breeding inventory, at 375,000 head, was down 5 percent from June 1, 2002 but unchanged from last quarter. Market hog inventory was 1 percent above last year and 2 percent above last quarter. Inventory of all hogs and pigs in the United States was 58.7 million head on June 1, 2003. This was 3 percent below June 1, 2002, but 1 percent above March 1, 2003. Breeding inventory, at 5.94 million head, was down 4 percent from June 1, 2002, and slightly below last quarter. Market inventory was 2 percent below last year but 1 percent above last quarter. Expectations of private forecasters averaged 97 percent of the previous year with a range of 96.0 percent to 98.2 percent. * Market hogs were down 2 percent from a year earlier. Private forecasters' expectations ranged from 96.5 percent to 98.5 percent with an average of 97 percent. * Breeding herd was down 4 percent from a year earlier. Expectations of private forecasters ranged from 95.0 percent to 97.9 percent with an average of 96 percent. * U.S. March-May pig crop was down 3 percent from a year earlier. Analysts expected the pig crop to be 97 percent of previous year; estimates ranged from 96.0 percent to 98.0 percent. * June-August intentions are down 2 percent from actual farrowings a year earlier. September-November intentions are down 1 percent from the previous years actual farrowings. * Commercial hog slaughter during March-May at 24.3 million head was 2 percent below a year earlier. Live hog imports were 1.61 million head, up 10 percent from a year earlier. Total exports decreased to 37,000 head, compared to 44,000 a year ago. Commercial Livestock Slaughter May 2003 number slaughtered and changes from last year and last month are shown below. May 2002 contained 23 weekdays (including one holiday) and four Saturdays. May 2003 contained 22 weekdays (including one holiday) and five Saturdays.
