Mark Harris State Statistician ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stocks of Grain and Hay Corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2003, in Nebraska totaled 967 million bushels, up 13 percent from last year. Wheat stored in all positions totaled 59 million bushels, up 13 percent from a year ago. Soybean stocks totaled 134 million bushels, down 5 percent from last year and the lowest since 1998. Sorghum stocks totaled 32 million bushels, up 29 percent from 2002 and the second lowest since 1956. Hay stocks on Nebraska farms totaled 5.2 million tons, up 54 percent from last year. United States corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2003 totaled 7.94 billion bushels, up 4 percent from December 1, 2002. Wheat stored in all positions totaled 1.52 billion bushels, up 15 percent from a year ago. Soybean stocks totaled 1.69 billion bushels, down 20 percent from December 1, 2002. Sorghum stocks totaled 234 million bushels, up 1 percent from a year ago. Hay stocks stored on farms totaled 111 million tons, up 7 percent from the previous year. Storage capacity for these facilities totaled 712 million bushels, up 3 percent from a year ago. In the United States, off-farm grain storage facilities totaled 9,796 on December 1, 2003, up 3 percent from December 1, 2002. Capacity of off- farm commercial grain storage totaled 8.50 billion bushels, on December 1, 2003, down fractionally from December 1, 2002. On-farm storage capacity in Nebraska is estimated at 960 million bushels, down 1 percent from last year. The United States on-farm storage capacity totaled 11.0 billion bushels on December 1, 2003, down 1 percent from December 1, 2002. Winter Wheat Seedings Nebraska's winter wheat seedings for the 2004 crop is expected to total 1.9 million acres, unchanged from last year. Seeding was underway by the first of September. Minimal rainfall allowed seeding to progress at a slightly faster than normal pace. At the end of December, the crop condition rated 36 percent good or excellent, near the 38 percent of a year ago. This was 63 percent less than the $1.30 billion in 2001 and 66 percent less than the $1.41 billion in 2000.
