Mark Harris State Director ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mid-Year Acreage Highlights As of June 1, Nebraska corn growers planted 8.3 million acres in 2004, up 2 percent from last year but 1 percent below 2002. Biotechnology varieties accounted for 60 percent of the planted acreage, up from 52 percent last year. Nebraska soybean producers planted 4.75 million acres, up 4 percent from the previous year and the second highest of record, 4 percent below the record high of 4.95 million set in 2001. Last fall, winter wheat was sown on 1.95 million acres, up 3 percent from a year earlier and the largest acreage since the 1997 crop. Sorghum growers planted 550,000 acres, 17 percent less than 2003 but up 22 percent from 2002. Alfalfa hay acreage for harvest, at 1.25 million acres, is down 14 percent from last year while other types of hay cut are down 9 percent. Oat seeding at 140,000 acres, are down 36 percent from 2003. Dry edible bean producers planted 130,000 acres, down 16 percent from a year earlier. Sugar beet plantings of 49,900 acres are up 10 percent from 2003. Source: USDA NASS Acreage June 30, 2004. Grain Stocks Nebraska corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2004, totaled 342 million bushels, down 4 percent from June 1, 2003. Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 39.2 million bushels, up 1 percent from last year. Wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2004 totaled 19.4 million bushels, up 16 percent from a year ago. U.S. corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2004, totaled 2.97 billion bushels, down slightly from June 1, 2003. Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 410 million bushels, down 32 percent from last year. All wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2004, totaled 546 million bushels, up 11 percent from a year ago. Source: USDA NASS Agricultural Prices, June 29, 2004. Hogs and Pigs Nebraska inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2004, was 2.85 million head. This was 3 percent below June 2003 but unchanged from March 1, 2004. Breeding inventory, at 360,000 head, was down 5 percent from June 1, 2003 but unchanged from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 2.49 million head, was 3 percent below last year but unchanged from last quarter. Inventory of all hogs and pigs in the United States was 60.1 million head on June 1, 2004. This was 1 percent above both June 1, 2003, and March 1, 2004. Breeding inventory, at 5.91 million head, was down 2 percent from June 1, 2003, and down slightly from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 54.2 million head, was 1 percent above both last year and last quarter. Expectations of private forecasters averaged 101 percent of the previous year with a range of 99.0 percent to 102.0 percent. * Market hogs were up 1 percent from a year earlier. Private forecasters’ expectations ranged from 99.0 percent to 103.0 percent with an average of 101 percent. * Breeding herd was down 2 percent from a year earlier. Expectations of private forecasters ranged from 97.0 percent to 99.5 percent with an average of 98 percent. * U.S. March-May pig crop was down slightly from a year earlier. Analysts expected the pig crop to be down slightly from the previous year; estimates ranged from 98.7 percent to 101.2 percent. * June-August intentions are down 1 percent from actual farrowings a year earlier. September-November intentions are down slightly from the previous years actual farrowings. * Commercial hog slaughter during March-May at 25.3 million head was 4 percent above a year earlier. Live hog imports were 2.1 million head, up 30 percent from a year earlier. Total exports increased to 65,000 head, compared to 26,000 a year ago. Commercial Livestock Slaughter May 2004 number slaughtered and changes from last year and last month are shown below. May 2003 contained 22 weekdays (including one holiday) and five Saturdays.
