Biotechnology varieties accounted for 69 percent of the planted acreage, up from 60 percent last year and the second highest among major corn producing states. Nebraska soybean producers planted 5.0 million acres, up 4 percent from the previous year. The 2005 plantings are the highest of record, 1 percent above the record high of 4.95 million set in 2001. Last fall, winter wheat was sown on 1.8 million acres, down 50,000 acres from 2004. Sorghum growers planted 390,000 acres, 29 percent less than 2004 and lowest since 1952. Alfalfa hay acreage for harvest, at 1.2 million acres, is down 4 percent from last year and the smallest since 1948. Oat seedings, at 150,000 acres, are up 7 percent from 2004. Dry edible bean producers planted 180,000 acres, up 50 percent from a year earlier. Proso millet plantings, at 120,000 acres, are down 25 percent from 2004. Sunflower acreage of 101,000 is up 45,000 acres from a year ago. Sugar beet plantings of 49,000 acres are down 2 percent from 2004. Source: USDA NASS Acreage June 30, 2005. Grain Stocks Nebraska corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2005 totaled 511 million bushels, up 49 percent from June 1, 2004. This is the highest June 1 stocks level since 1989. Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 44.6 million bushels, up 14 percent from last year. Wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2005 totaled 16.1 million bushels, down 17 percent from a year ago. U.S. corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2005, totaled 4.32 billion bushels, up 45 percent from June 1, 2004. This is the highest June 1 stocks level since 1988. Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 700 million bushels, up 70 percent from last year. All wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2005, totaled 540 million bushels, down 1 percent from a year ago. This was 4 percent below June 1, 2004 but unchanged from March 1, 2005. Breeding inventory, at 355,000 head, was down 1 percent from June 1, 2004 but unchanged from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 2.4 million head, was 4 percent below last year but unchanged from last quarter. Inventory of all hogs and pigs in the United States was 60.8 million head on June 1, 2005. This was up slightly from June 1, 2004, and up 2 percent from March 1, 2005. Breeding inventory, at 5.98 million head, was up 1 percent from both June 1, 2004, and last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 54.8 million head, was up slightly from last year, and up 2 percent from last quarter. Expectations of private forecasters averaged 101 percent of the previous year with a range of 100.0 percent to 101.0 percent. * Market hogs were up slightly from a year earlier. Private forecasters' expectations ranged from 100.0 percent to 101.0 percent with an average of 101 percent. * Breeding herd was up 1 percent from a year earlier. Expectations of private forecasters ranged from 100.0 percent to 102.0 percent with an average of 101 percent. * U.S. March-May pig crop was up l percent from a year earlier. Analysts expected the pig crop to be up 1 percent from the previous year; estimates ranged from 100.3 percent to 101.2 percent. * June-August intentions are down slightly from actual farrowings a year earlier. September-November intentions are down slightly from the previous years actual farrowings. * Commercial hog slaughter during March-May at 25.4 million head was 1 percent above a year earlier. Live hog imports were 1.9 million head, down 10 percent from a year earlier. Total exports decreased to 27,000 head, compared to 37,000 a year ago. Commercial Livestock Slaughter May 2005 number slaughtered and changes from last year and last month are shown below. May 2004 contained 21 weekdays (including one holiday) and five Saturdays. May 2005 contained 22 weekdays (including one holiday) and four Saturdays.
