These data are direct results of information provided by Nebraska producers and agribusinesses to the surveys conducted each month by this office. Thank you for your response to these surveys. Mark Harris Director ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nebraska Cattle on Feed Up 6 Percent Nebraska feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head contained 2.32 million cattle on feed on May 1, up 6 percent from last year and 10 percent above May 1, 2004. This was the largest May 1 inventory since the data set began in 1994. Placements of cattle into feedlots during April totaled 320,000 head, the same as the previous two years. Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 390,000 head, up 3 percent from last year but 7 percent below two years ago. Other disappearance during April totaled 10,000 head, the same as April 2005 and 2004. U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 9 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.6 million head on May 1, 2006. The inventory was 9 percent above last year and 11 percent above May 1, 2004. This was the highest May 1 inventory since the series began in 1996. Placements in feedlots during April totaled 1.63 million, 2 percent below 2005 but 2 percent above 2004. Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 1.79 million, down slightly from 2005 and 5 percent below 2004. Other disappearance totaled 87,000 during April, 4 percent below 2005 and 10 percent below 2004. Source: USDA NASS Cattle on Feed, May 19, 2006 2006 Wheat Production Down 9 Percent from Last Year Based on May 1 conditions, Nebraska's 2006 winter wheat crop is forecast at 62.7 million bushels, down 9 percent from last year’s crop. Average yield is forecast at 38 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from last year and the ten-year average. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.65 million acres, down 110,000 acres or 6 percent from last year. This would be 94 percent of the planted acres, compared to 95 percent last year and the ten-year average 93 percent. As of April 30, soil moisture supplies were below a year ago but above the 5-year average level. May 1 Hay Stocks Down from Last Year May 1 hay stocks of 1.07 million tons are down 26 percent from last year and 11 percent below the ten-year average. Winter storms and increased cattle inventories have reduced current supplies.
