These data are direct results of information provided by Nebraska producers and agribusinesses to the surveys conducted each month by this office. Thank you for your response to these surveys. Mark Harris Director ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nebraska Cattle on Feed Up 16 Percent Nebraska feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head contained 2.05 million cattle on feed on September 1, up 16 percent from last year and 14 percent above September 1, 2004. Placements of cattle into feedlots during August totaled 470,000 head, up 13 percent from 2005 and 12 percent above 2004. Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 360,000 head, down 1 percent from last year but equal to August two years ago. Other disappearance during August totaled 10,000 the same as August 2005 and August 2004. U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 10 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.0 million head on September 1, 2006. The inventory was 10 percent above both September 1, 2005 and September 1, 2004. Placements in feedlots during August totaled 2.30 million, 15 percent above 2005 and 9 percent above 2004. Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 2.08 million, 2 percent above 2005 and 8 percent above 2004. Other disappearance totaled 59,000 during August, 11 percent above 2005 and 5 percent above 2004. Source: USDA NASS Cattle on Feed, September 22, 2006 Hogs and Pigs Nebraska inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2006 was 2.9 million head. This was 4 percent above September 1, 2005 but down 2 percent from June 1, 2006. Breeding inventory, at 350,000 head, was unchanged from September 1, 2005 but 4 percent below last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 2.55 million head, was 4 percent above last year but 1 percent below last quarter. U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2006 was 62.7 million head. This was up 1 percent from September 1, 2005 and up 2 percent from June 1, 2006. Breeding inventory, at 6.08 million head, was up 2 percent from last year and up slightly from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 56.6 million head, was up 1 percent from last year and up 2 percent from last quarter. Source: USDA NASS Potatoes 2005 Summary, September 2006 Prices Received By Farmers The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in September, at 118 percent, based on 1990-92=100, decreased 2 points (1.7 percent) from August. The Crop Index is down 7 points (5.6 percent) but the Livestock Index increased 1 point (0.9 percent). Producers received lower commodity prices for lettuce, potatoes, hogs, and broccoli. Higher prices were received for cattle, milk, tomatoes, and turkeys. The overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Decreased average marketings of cattle, broilers, grapes, wheat, and grapes offset increased marketings of soybeans, apples, corn, and potatoes. Preliminary All Farm Products Index is up 2 points (1.7 percent) from September 2005. The Food Commodities Index, at 1.21, decreased 2 points (1.6 percent) from last month and is unchanged from September 2005.
