Nevada Hay Prices
Nevada All Hay and Alfalfa Hay prices for April held steady while All Other Hay prices were down from prices in March. The All Hay price averaged $119.00 per ton and Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures averaged $119.00 per ton. All Other Hay prices averaged $122.00 per ton. March prices were $119.00 for All Hay, $119.00 for Alfalfa, and $127.00 for All Other Hay. National level prices were up. All Hay came in at $124.00 per ton, $7.00 per ton above the March average. Alfalfa, prices at $128.00 per ton, up $8.00 from last month. All Other Hay averaged $113.00 per ton, up $5.00 from March. |
Quarterly Milk Production
The January-March 2007 quarterly milk production for Nevada totaled 142 million pounds, 1.4 percent above last year’s 140 million pounds and 2.1 percent above last quarter. During the first quarter of 2007, the average number of milk cows, at 27,000, is unchanged from last year and last quarter.
Milk production in the U.S. during the January - March quarter totaled 46.0 billion pounds, up 1 percent from the January - March quarter last year. The average number of milk cows in the U.S. during the quarter was 9.13 million head, 36,000 head more than the same period last year.
April Crop Weather Summary
High pressure kept much of the month warmer and drier than normal. A few storms passed through the State, but they were generally fast moving and dropped limited moisture. Precipitation totals for the month were below normal in all but a few localities. Temperatures for the month averaged above normal statewide. Higher temperatures diminished mountain snow packs. All major watersheds had far below normal snow pack by the end of the month. The warming temperatures had forages greening where soil moisture was adequate, but some areas were too dry to benefit. Spring planting of small grains was underway and widespread irrigation commenced. Onion planting was completed and garlic fields broke dormancy. Calving and lambing were active. Main farm and ranch activities: Spring planting, calving, lambing, irrigating, weed control.

Milk Production, Disposition, and Income 2006
Nevada Report
Cash receipts from marketings of milk in Nevada during 2006, at $69 million, were down 11 percent from the $77.7 million in 2005. Nevada producers received an average of $12.50 per hundredweight of milk sold in 2006. This is a 14 percent decrease from the $14.50 received in 2005.
Total milk production in Nevada increased 3 percent in 2006 to 558 million pounds. The rate per cow, at 20,667, was down 5 percent from 2005. The 2006 average number of cows on farms, at 27,000 head, was up 2,000 head from 2005.
United States Report
Milk production increased 2.8 percent in 2006 to 182 billion pounds. The rate per cow, at 19,951 pounds, was 386 pounds above 2005. The annual average number of milk cows on farms was 9.11 million head, up 69,000 head from 2005. Cash receipts from marketings of milk during 2006 totaled $23.4 billion, 12.3 percent lower than 2005. Producer returns averaged $12.97 per hundredweight, 14.6 percent below 2005. Marketings totaled 181 billion pounds, 2.8 percent above 2005. Marketings include whole milk sold to plants and dealers and milk sold directly to consumers.
