Production of winter wheat in New York is forecast at 6.60 million bushels, the same as May 1, and 49 percent above last year. Area for grain harvest is unchanged from May 1 at 120,000 acres. Yields are expected to average 55.0 bushels per acre, the same as the May 1 forecast and up 3.0 bushels from last year.

2007 NEW YORK CHEESE PRODUCTION INCREASES
Total cheese production in New York, excluding cottage cheese, totaled 737 million pounds in 2007. This is a 5.4 percent increase from the previous year. Italian cheese, which accounted for 52.9 percent of New York’s total cheese output, at 390 million pounds, was up 1.9 percent. Total cottage cheese production at 291 million pounds was up 1.6 percent from 2006.
Total U.S. cheese production for 2007 totaled 9.70 billion pounds (excluding cottage cheese), up 1.8 percent from a year earlier. Italian cheese varieties accounted for 42.6 of total cheese production in 2007 at 4.13 billion pounds. American type cheese production was 3.88 billion pounds, 0.9 percent below 2006 and accounted for 40.0 percent of total cheese production in 2007.

MAY MILK PRICES DECREASE FROM APRIL
Prices received by New York producers for milk sold during May were down from a month earlier. The price of eggs, corn, and hay also decreased. The price of wheat, oats, apples, and potatoes increased. Many previous month prices were revised due to more complete sales information.
The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in May, at 150 percent, based on 1990-92=100, increased 5 points (3.4 percent) from April. The Crop Index is up 4 points (2.4 percent) and the Livestock Index increased 5 points (3.9 percent). Producers received higher prices for hogs, cattle, onions, and broilers and lower prices for eggs, lettuce, wheat, and broccoli.

MAY MILK PRODUCTION UP
New York dairy herds produced 1.11 billion pounds of milk during May. Milk cows were unchanged from the previous year while milk per cow increased from the previous year resulting in a 5 percent increase in milk production compared to May 2007. The number of milk cows averaged 626 thousand head, unchanged from May of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1770 pounds, up 80 pounds from the May 2007 rate.
Milk production in the 23 major States during May totaled 15.4 billion pounds, up 3.4 percent from May 2007. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,816 pounds for May, 25 pounds above May 2007. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.46 million head, 162,000 head more than May 2007, and 12,000 head more than April 2008.

NEW YORK EGG PRODUCTION UP 6 PERCENT IN APRIL
Egg production on New York farms totaled 95 million eggs in April 2008, up 6 percent from last year. The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 3.94 million, increased 3 percent from April 2007 and the rate of lay increased 3 percent to 2,411 eggs per 100 layers.
U.S. egg production totaled 7.38 billion during April 2008, down 1 percent from last year. Production included 6.28 billion table eggs, and 1.11 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.04 billion were broiler-type and 66 million were egg-type. Eggs in incubators totaled 39.6 million on May 1, 2008, up 10 percent from a year ago.
