NEW YORK CROP AND LIVESTOCK REPORT January 2011 Monthly No. 973-1-11 WINTER WHEAT SEEDINGS New York producers seeded a total of 120,000 acres of winter wheat in the fall of 2010 for harvest in 2011. This is up 9 percent from the 110,000 acres seeded a year ago. U.S. winter wheat seeded area for 2010 is expected to total 41.0 million acres, up 10 percent from 2010. Nationally, hay stocks on farms December 1, 2010 was estimated at 102 million tons. This estimate reflects a decrease of 5 percent from last year’s estimate. Acres harvested for grain totaled 590,000, down 1 percent from the 595,000 acres harvested last year. The statewide yield, at a record high 150 bushels per acre, was up 16 bushels per acre. This total was up 40 percent from the 77,000 head on hand a year earlier. Of the current inventory, 12,000 hogs are for breeding purposes, up 1,000 head from the previous December. The remaining 96,000 hogs and pigs, raised for home use or the slaughter market, increased by 30,000 head from a year ago. United States inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2010 was 64.3 million head. This was down 1 percent from December 1, 2009, and down 2 percent from September 1, 2010. Breeding inventory, at 5.78 million head, was down 1 percent from last year, but up slightly from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 58.5 million head, was down 1 percent from last year, and down 2 percent from last quarter. The U.S. September-November 2010 pig crop, at 28.2 million head, was down slightly from 2009. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 2.85 million head, down 2 percent from 2009. The sows farrowed during this quarter represented 49 percent of the breeding herd. The average pigs saved per litter was a record high 9.89 for the September-November 2010 period, compared to 9.70 last year. Pigs saved per litter by size of operation ranged from 7.70 for operations with 1-99 hogs and pigs to 10.00 for operations with more than 5,000 hogs and pigs. VALUE OF NEW YORK FRUIT PRODUCTION INCREASES The value of New York’s 2010 tree fruit and grape production totaled $332 million, up 14 percent from the 2009 value. The value of utilized production was above the previous year for apples, grapes, and peaches. The 2010 apple crop in New York was down 5 percent to 1.30 billion pounds. This year’s value of utilized apple production, based on packinghouse door equivalent returns, totaled $233 million. New York ranks second in apple production behind Washington. Grape production in New York increased 32 percent from 2009 to 176,000 tons. Fresh grapes totaled 4,000 tons while 172,000 tons were crushed by wineries and processors. Grapes utilized for juice accounted for 70 percent of the total grapes processed with the remaining 30 percent going for wine. NEW YORK BERRY PRODUCTION DECREASES Strawberry production in New York was down 20 percent from 2009 to 3.50 million pounds. The value of utilized production is estimated at $6.90 million, down 24 percent from the $9.02 million in 2009. Production of blueberries for the Empire State was at 2.30 million pounds. The 2010 crop is valued at $4.52 million, a slight decrease from $4.56 million in 2009. Total raspberry production in New York was 1.30 million pounds in 2010, down 13 percent from 2009. The raspberry crop is valued at $3.75 million, an 8 percent decrease from last year. New York’s berry crop had a combined total value of $15.2 million. This value is down 14 percent from the $17.6 million in 2009. 2 DECEMBER MILK PRICES DECREASED FROM NOVEMBER Prices received by New York producers for milk sold during December were down from a month earlier. The price of corn and apples decreased also. The price of hay and potatoes increased. Many previous month prices were revised due to more complete sales information. Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $18.40 per hundredweight of milk sold during December, down $1 from November but up $1.30 from December a year ago. The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in December, at 160 percent, based on 1990-1992=100, increased 1 point (0.6 percent) from November. The Crop Index is up 2 points (1.1 percent) but the Livestock Index decreased 1 point (0.7 percent). Producers received higher prices for corn, soybeans, wheat, and cattle and lower prices for lettuce, milk, oranges, and onions. In addition to prices, the overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased monthly marketings of wheat, milk, oranges, and broilers offset decreased marketings of soybeans, corn, cattle, and grapes. Excludes farm slaughter. 3 DECEMBER MILK PRODUCTION New York dairy herds produced 1.07 billion pounds of milk during December. Milk cows and production per cow were up from the previous year resulting in a 4.6 percent increase in milk production compared to December 2009. The number of milk cows averaged 611,000 head, up 1,000 head from December of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,750 pounds, up 75 pounds from the December 2009 rate. Milk production in the 23 major States during December totaled 15.0 billion pounds, up 2.8 percent from December 2009. November revised production at 14.4 billion pounds, was up 3.1 percent from November 2009. The November revision represented an increase of 8 million pounds or 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,794 pounds for December, 33 pounds above December 2009. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.39 million head, 74,000 head more than December 2009, and 15,000 head more than November 2010. The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 4.20 million, increased 3 percent from November 2009 and the rate of lay increased 2 percent to 2,451 eggs per 100 layers. United States egg production totaled 7.54 billion during November 2010, down slightly from last year. Production included 6.51 billion table eggs, and 1.04 billion hatching eggs, of which 970 million were broiler-type and 65 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during November 2010 averaged 338 million, down slightly from last year. November egg production per 100 layers was 2,232 eggs, down slightly from November 2009.
