E-mail: nass-ny@nass.usda.gov (518) 457-5570 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: William Blackson Wednesday, March 18, 2009 www.nass.usda.gov/ny SUFFOLK COUNTY LEADS NEW YORK STATE AGRICULTURE RECEIPTS Final results of the 2007 Census of Agriculture show Suffolk County sales totaled $243 million, the top reported market value of agricultural products sold by a single county in New York, according to Steve Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York office. In Suffolk County crop sales including nursery and greenhouse products, at $225 million, increased by 26 percent since 2002 and comprised 93 percent of that county’s cash receipts from agriculture products sold in 2007. Wyoming County was the second leading county in 2007 with agriculture cash receipts totaling $230 million. With $179 million in receipts from milk and other dairy products from cows, dairy comprised 78 percent of the market value of agricultural products sold in Wyoming County for 2007. Third in line was Cayuga County with $214 million in agriculture products sold, $166 million of which came from total sales of livestock, poultry, and their products, an increase of 76 percent in this commodity group since the 2002 census. The 2007 Census of Agriculture is the most comprehensive source of statistics portraying our Nation's agriculture. It is the only source of uniform agricultural data for every county in the United States.
