                              NEW YORK POULTRY

The 2007 Census of Agriculture found 3.95 million layers on 4,006 farms for
the state of New York, according to Steve Ropel, Director of USDA’s
National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office.  The
number of layers on New York farms in 2007 increased 3 percent from the
2002 total of 3.82 million.  Broilers on New York farms totaled 469
thousand in 2007, down 23 percent from the 2002 total of 605 thousand.  The
number of ducks sold by New York producers declined 4 percent to 2.43
million in 2007 from the 2002 level of 2.54 million.  Poultry and eggs
generated $124 million in sales for New York in 2007, up 14 percent from
2002 and representing 3 percent of New York’s total agricultural sales.

The Census, which is conducted every five years, provides facts and figures
on virtually every aspect of U.S. agriculture, including number and types
of farm operations, the economic aspects of farm production and the
demographics of U.S. farm operators.
