Of these, 18,743 farms were primarily engaged in crop production and 17,609 were primarily engaged in livestock production, according to Steve Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office. These were designated as defined by the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). The crop production operations had $1.51 billion in sales and the livestock production operations had $2.91 billion in sales. The Census, which is conducted every five years, provides facts and figures on virtually every aspect of U.S. agriculture, including number and types of farm operations, the economic aspects of farm production and the demographics of U.S. farm operators.
