E-mail: nass-ny@nass.usda.gov (518) 457-5570 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Greg Lemmons Wednesday, September 2, 2009 www.nass.usda.gov/ny FIELD CROP FARMS AND ACREAGE The 2007 census shows a decrease in the number of farms harvesting field crops and the acreage harvested in New York from 2002 to 2007, according to Steve Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Office. In 2007, there were 4,243 farms harvesting 551,629 acres of corn for grain. The number of farms is down by 3 while the harvested acreage is up 22 percent from 2002. Livingston County harvested 42,544 acres of grain corn, the most in the state. Corn silage farms decreased 20 percent from 2002, but harvested acres only decreased by 7 percent. In 2007, 507,568 acres of corn silage were harvested on 5,278 farms. Wyoming County harvested the most in the state with 41,673 acres. Dry beans were harvested on 143 farms totaling 16,218 acres in 2007. Number of farms decreased 53 percent and harvested acreage decreased 50 percent from 2002. Livingston County leads the state harvesting 5,638 acres. Soybean farms increased 19 percent from 2002, and harvested acres increased by 43 percent. In 2007 199,775 acres of soybeans were harvested on 1,347 farms. Cayuga County harvested the most in the state with 27,638 acres. All dry hay (including alfalfa, other tame, small grain, and wild) was harvested on 18,987 farms totaling 1,395,813 acres in 2007. Number of farms decreased 10 percent and harvested acreage decreased by 19 percent from 2002. Steuben County leads the state harvesting 85,657 acres.
