E-mail: nass-ny@nass.usda.gov (518) 457-5570 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Blair Smith Wednesday, October 14, 2009 www.nass.usda.gov/ny NEW YORK FARM NUMBERS BY TYPE The 2007 Census of Agriculture placed New York farm numbers at 36,352, according to Steve Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office. Of these farms 30,621, or 84 percent, were organized as family or individual type farms. Farms organized as partnerships totaled 3,347 farms, or 9 percent of the total, with 2,265 of these partnerships registered under state law. Of the total farms, 2,110, or 6 percent were organized as corporations with 1,885 of these being family held. The remaining 274 farms were organized under cooperative, estate, trust, institutional, or other types of agreements. The Census, which is conducted every five years, provides facts and figures on virtually every aspect of U.S. agriculture, including number and types of farm operations, the economic aspects of farm production and the demographics of U.S. farm operators.
