A record high 285,000 acres of soybeans are expected to be planted, up 12 percent from the previous record of 255,000 planted in 2009. An estimated 282,000 acres will be harvested for beans, 11 percent more than last year. Farmers intend to plant 1,050,000 acres of corn for all purposes in 2010, 2 percent less than acres planted in 2009. Acreage for grain is expected to total 590,000 acres, down 1 percent from the 595,000 acres harvested last year. Oat seedings totaled 80,000 acres, the same as the March intentions estimate and 11 percent less than the 90,000 acres planted last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 55,000 acres, 8 percent less than the acres harvested in 2009. Dry bean acreage is estimated at 16,000 acres, the same as a year ago. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 15,500 acres, down slightly from the 15,600 acres harvested in 2009. Barley plantings totaled 12,000 acres, the same as last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 10,000 acres, the same as last year. Acreage for harvest for all types of dry hay is expected to total 1.28 million acres, down 6 percent from last year. Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures for dry hay, at 380,000 acres, is up 9 percent and acres for other types of dry hay, at 900,000 thousand acres, is down 11 percent from a year earlier. U. S. corn planted area for all purposes in 2010 is estimated at 87.9 million acres, up 2 percent from last year. The largest increases in planted acreage compared to last year are reported in Illinois and Kansas, both up 600,000 acres from 2009. Other notable increases were shown in Indiana, up 400,000 acres; Missouri, up 300,000 acres; and Ohio, up 250,000 acres. The largest decrease in planted acreage is reported in Iowa, down 400,000 acres, while both Nebraska and South Dakota are down 350,000 acres from the previous year. U. S. soybean planted area for 2010 is estimated at a record high 78.9 million acres, up 2 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 78.0 million acres, is also up 2 percent from 2009, and will be the largest harvested area on record, if realized. Compared with last year, planted acreage increased by 300,000 acres or more in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, and Nebraska. The States with the largest declines compared with last year are Arkansas, down 270,000 acres, and North Carolina, down 250,000 acres. Record high planted acreage is estimated in Kansas, Nebraska, New York, and Pennsylvania, and planted area will tie the previous record high in Minnesota and Oklahoma. The first yield and production forecast will be released on August 12 for corn, soybeans, dry beans, and hay. Wheat and oats will be published on July 9. # 6-30-10
