                        2010 NEW YORK FIELD CROP SUMMARY 

The 2010 crop year got off to a good start due to warm, dry weather during the 
planting season. Warm weather in May and early June pushed hay harvest ahead by 
a couple of weeks, but slowed recently planted corn and soybean growth. Mid-June 
to July brought scattered showers that aided plant growth, as well as forage 
re-growth. Winter wheat harvest was ahead by a couple of weeks, but rain delayed 
the oat harvest until late August or in some cases into September. Crop development 
continued to be at least two weeks ahead of normal on through harvest. 

New York grain corn production is estimated at 88.5 million bushels, up 11 percent 
from last year. Area for harvest totaled 590,000 acres, down 1 percent from a 
year ago. Yields averaged a record high 150 bushels per acre, up 16 bushels from 
last year’s 134 bushels per acre. 

Corn cut for silage totaled 8.65 million tons, an increase of 2 percent from 
last year. Area for harvest decreased 3 percent to 455,000 acres. Yields are 
estimated at 19.0 tons per acre, the second highest on record and up 1 ton per 
acre from last year. 

The 2010 soybean crop was estimated at a record high 13.4 million bushels, 23 
percent above last year's production. Area harvested, a record high at 279,000 
acres, was up 10 percent from a year ago. Yields averaged a record high 48 bushels 
per acre, up 5 bushels an acre from last year. 

Wheat production totaled 6.70 million bushels, down 2 percent from the previous 
year. Harvested acreage, at 100,000 acres, was down 5 percent form 2009. Winter 
wheat yields averaged a record high 67 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels from a 
year ago. 

Oat production, at 3.89 million bushels, was down 16 percent from the previous 
year. Area harvested, at 58,000 acres, was down 3 percent from last year. The 
average yield, at 67 bushels per acre, was down 10 bushels from last year’s 
record high 77 bushels per acre. 

Production of barley in New York totaled 550,000 bushels, up 4 percent from a 
year earlier. Acreage harvested for grain totaled 10,000 acres, the same as a 
year ago. The average yield per acre, at 55 bushels, was up 2 bushels from last 
year. 

All dry hay production was 2.42 million tons, down 2 percent from last year's 
2.47 million tons. Acreage harvested for dry hay during 2010 increased 1 percent 
to 1.38 million acres. Yield, at 1.75 tons per acre, was 4 percent below a 
year ago. 

New York production of alfalfa dry hay was estimated at 882 thousand tons, up 
10 percent from last year's crop of 805 thousand tons. Area harvested, at 
420 thousand acres, increased 20 percent from last year. Yields averaged 2.10 
tons per acre, down 9 percent from last year. 

Potato production totaled 5.12 million hundredweight (cwt.), up 3 percent from 
the 4.95 million cwt. produced in 2009. Harvested acreage totaled a record low 
16,000 acres, down 500 acres from last year. Yields averaged 320 cwt. per acre, 
up 20 cwt. from last year and ties the record high set in 2008. 

Dry Bean production totaled 282,000 cwt., up 46 percent from 2009. Acres 
harvested totaled a record low 14,900 acres, down 700 acres from a year earlier. 
The average yield, at 1,890 pounds per acre, was up 650 cwt. from last year.
