NEW YORK AND U.S. CHEESE PRODUCTION INCREASES

Total cheese production in New York, excluding cottage cheese, totaled 737 million pounds in 2007 according to Stephen Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field office.  This is a 5.4 percent increase from the previous year.  Italian cheese, which accounted for 52.9 percent of New York’s total cheese output, at 390 million pounds, was up 1.9 percent.  Total cottage cheese production at 291 million pounds was up 1.6 percent from 2006.

Total U.S. cheese production for 2007 totaled 9.70 billion pounds (excluding cottage cheese), up 1.8 percent from a year earlier.  Italian cheese varieties accounted for 42.6 of total cheese production in 2007 at 4.13 billion pounds.  American type cheese production was 3.88 billion pounds, 0.9 percent below 2006 and accounted for 40.0 percent of total cheese production in 2007.
