                         APRIL MILK PRODUCTION DOWN

New York dairy herds produced 1.04 billion pounds of milk during April
according to Stephen Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural
Statistics Service, New York Field office.  Milk cows declined while
production per cow was unchanged from the previous year resulting in a 1
percent decrease in milk production compared to April 2008.  The number of
milk cows averaged 623,000 head, down 3,000 head from April of the previous
year.  Milk per cow averaged 1,670 pounds, unchanged from the April 2008
rate.

Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $11.80 per
hundredweight of milk sold during April, up $0.30 from March and $6.40
below April a year ago.

Milk production in the 23 major States during April totaled 14.9 billion
pounds, up slightly from April 2008.  March revised production at 15.2
billion pounds, was up 0.1 percent from March 2008.  The March revision
represented an increase of 47 million pounds or 0.3 percent from last
month's preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,758 pounds for April,
1 pound above April 2008.   The number of milk cows on farms in the 23
major States was 8.48 million head, 3,000 head less than April 2008, and
2,000 head less than March 2009.
