Milk cows declined while production per cow was up from the previous year resulting in a 1.7 percent increase in milk production compared to April 2009. The number of milk cows averaged 610,000 head, down 13,000 head from April of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,735 pounds, up 65 pounds from the April 2009 rate. Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $15.30 per hundredweight of milk sold during April, down 80 cents from March but $2.60 more than April a year ago. Milk production in the 23 major States during April totaled 15.2 billion pounds, up 1.7 percent from April 2009. March revised production at 15.4 billion pounds, was up 0.9 percent from March 2009. The March revision represented an increase of 9 million pounds or 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,823 pounds for April, 63 pounds above April 2009. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.33 million head, 155,000 head less than April 2009, but 3,000 head more than March 2010. # 5-19-10
