Milk cows declined while production per cow was up from the previous year resulting in a 3.6 percent increase in milk production compared to September 2009. The number of milk cows averaged 611,000 head, down 6,000 head from September of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,695 pounds, up 75 pounds from the September 2009 rate. Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $18.20 per hundredweight of milk sold during September, up 20 cents from August and $4.70 more than September a year ago. Milk production in the 23 major States during September totaled 14.5 billion pounds, up 3.6 percent from September 2009. August revised production at 15.0 billion pounds, was up 2.7 percent from August 2009. The August revision represented a decrease of 18 million pounds or 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,729 pounds for September, 54 pounds above September 2009. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.37 million head, 31,000 head more than September 2009, and 4,000 head more than August 2010. # 10-20-10
