Milk cows were unchanged but production per cow was up from the previous year resulting in a 0.8 percent increase in milk production compared to April 2010. The number of milk cows averaged 610,000 head, unchanged from April of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,770 pounds, up 15 pounds from the April 2010 rate. Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $21.10 per hundredweight of milk sold during April, down 20 cents from March but $5.60 more than April a year ago. Milk production in the 23 major States during April totaled 15.5 billion pounds, up 1.7 percent from April 2010. March revised production at 15.8 billion pounds, was up 2.4 percent from March 2010. The March revision represented a decrease of 6 million pounds or less than 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,834 pounds for April, 9 pounds above April 2010. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.43 million head, 97,000 head more than April 2010, and 8,000 head more than March 2011. # 05-19-2011
