Milk cows were unchanged but production per cow was up from the previous year resulting in a 0.3 percent increase in milk production compared to June 2010. The number of milk cows averaged 610,000 head, unchanged from June of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,775 pounds, up 5 pounds from the June 2010 rate. Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $22.00 per hundredweight of milk sold during June, up 70 cents from May and $5.20 more than June a year ago. Milk production in the 23 major States during June totaled 15.4 billion pounds, up 1.4 percent from June 2010. May revised production at 16.1 billion pounds, was up 1.6 percent from May 2010. The May revision represented an increase of 20 million pounds or 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,819 pounds for June, 2 pounds above June 2010.
