NEW YORK NURSERY SALES UP 15 PERCENT,
U.S. NURSERY SALES UP 17 PERCENT
The 2006 Nursery Production Survey conducted this year of operations with over $100,000 in sales revealed the gross value of sales for 12 categories of nursery products totaled $63.3 million in New York, an increase of 15 percent from 2003. Deciduous shade trees and coniferous evergreens accounted for 19 percent of sales each, while broadleaf evergreens accounted for 17 percent, deciduous shrubs 14 percent, and deciduous flowering trees 12 percent. The remaining 19 percent of sales came from fruit and nut plants, propagative nursery materials, Christmas trees, ornamental grasses, and other woody ornamentals.
Total gross sales of U.S. nursery crops totals $4.65 billion in 2006, an increase of 17 percent over 3 years earlier, for operations with $100,000 or more in sales in the 17 States surveyed. Eleven nursery crop categories and cut Christmas trees are included. All data for 2003 have been carried forward from the previous report. In 2006, broadleaf evergreens account for 18 percent of the total sales, followed by deciduous shrubs at 14 percent, deciduous shade trees at 13 percent, and coniferous evergreens at 12 percent. The top three States measured by gross value of sales are California with 24 percent of the total, Oregon with 18 percent and Florida with 17 percent.

All New York nursery operations with sales over $10,000 totaled 257, compared to 308 in 2003. There were 90 firms with sales of $100,000 or greater, while firms with gross sales over $1 million totaled 16. In 2003, there were 82 firms with sales over $100,000 and 15 operations with sales over $1,000,000. The 257 nurseries reported production area of 17,246 acres, compared to 16,259 acres in 2003.

There were 118 nursery and Christmas tree operations with over $10,000 in sales who had hired workers 150 days or more, and 125 operations who had hired workers 149 days or less. Gross wages paid were $19,055,000. Hired workers numbered 1,985 total, with 945 working 150 days or more, and 1,040 working 149 days or less.
