E-mail: nass-ny@nass.usda.gov (518) 457-5570 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Brent Farley Friday, July 8, 2011 www.nass.usda.gov/ny 2010 NEW YORK APPLE PRODUCTION DOWN 7 PERCENT End of season surveys of apple growers and processors place New York's 2010 production at 1,270 million pounds, 7 percent below the 2009 crop of 1,370 million pounds, according to King Whetstone Director of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office. Fresh market production of 600 million pounds, down 12 percent from 2009, comprised 47 percent of the total. Apples for processing amounted to 660 million pounds, down 2 percent from the 2009 crop year. Apples processed for canning and applesauce totaled 340 million pounds, up 2 percent from the previous year. Production used for cider and juice totaled 255 million pounds, down 9 percent from last year. Other uses of apples totaled 65 million pounds. The value of utilized production, on a packinghouse door equivalent basis, totaled $227 million. Price per pound averaged 18.0 cents. The price for fresh apples averaged 26.3 cents per pound, while processing apples averaged $209 per ton. Nationally, utilized apple production for 2010 was placed at 9.22 billion pounds, down 2 percent from 2009. The value of the nation's 2010 apple crop, at $2.22 billion dollars, increased 2 percent from the 2009 crop value. Price per pound averaged 24.1 cents in 2010, a slight increase from the previous year.
