DATA CORRECTION
Table 2 on page
2 has been revised. The number of producers,
by county, has been
corrected from the original publication
released in June
2000.
MORE MAPLE PRODUCERS THAN 5 YEAR AGO
The number of maple syrup producers in New York reporting production in 2000 was 1,525, up 5 percent from the 1,450 producers accounted for in 1995. The number of taps totaled 1.26 million compared with 1.56 million in 1995, a decrease of 19 percent. Production totaled 210,000 gallons of syrup. This compares with peak production of the last decade of 400,000 gallons in 1992 and the low of 180,000 gallons in 1993.
This report is the
result of the 2000 maple census, a more complete accounting of New York maple
production, and is comparable to the previous census enumerations done in 1985,
1990, and 1995. Nearly 1,700 names were contacted to determine if they had at
least 100 taps and made syrup during the 2000 sugaring season.

MAPLE SYRUP VALIDATION SURVEY
The New York Agricultural Statistics Service conducted a special validation study in 12 selected counties for the 2002 production year. This was done due to the concern in the maple industry that the number of producers and production estimates for New York are low because some producers were never getting surveyed or counted. Detailed results of the study will be published with the annual maple release in June of 2003. County and State estimates on the back of this release may be revised at that time as a result of the validation survey.
