E-mail: nass-ny@nass.usda.gov (518) 457-5570 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Onslow Hall Monday, January 25, 2010 www.nass.usda.gov/ny NEW YORK EGG PRODUCTION DOWN 5 PERCENT IN DECEMBER Egg production on New York farms totaled 98 million eggs in December 2009, down 5 percent from last year, according to Stephen Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office. The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 3.98 million, decreased 5 percent from December 2008 and the rate of lay decreased slightly to 2,465 eggs per 100 layers. A dozen eggs brought New York poultry farmers an average of 91.1 cents per dozen for eggs sold in December, up 4.8 cents from November and up 2.1 cents from December 2008. U.S. egg production totaled 7.83 billion during December 2009, up 1 percent from last year. Production included 6.76 billion table eggs, and 1.07 billion hatching eggs, of which 995 million were broiler-type and 72 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during December 2009 averaged 340 million, down slightly from last year. December egg production per 100 layers was 2,304 eggs, up 1 percent from December 2008. U.S Egg-type chicks hatched during December 2009 totaled 39.7 million, up 7 percent from December 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 38.9 million on January 1, 2010, up 6 percent from a year ago.
