The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 4.05 million, increased 4 percent from January 2008 and the rate of lay increased slightly to 2,471 eggs per 100 layers. A dozen eggs brought New York poultry farmers an average of 93.7 cents per dozen for eggs sold in January, down 4.7 cents from December and down 34.1 cents from January 2008. U.S. egg production totaled 7.67 billion during January 2009, up slightly from last year. Production included 6.59 billion table eggs, and 1.08 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.00 billion were broiler-type and 72 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during January 2009 averaged 341 million, down 1 percent from last year. January egg production per 100 layers was 2,249 eggs, up 1 percent from January 2008. U.S. Egg-type chicks hatched during January 2009 totaled 38.1 million, down 5 percent from January 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 35.2 million on February 1, 2009, down 1 percent from a year ago.
