The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 4.10 million, increased 4 percent from April 2008 and the rate of lay increased 1 percent to 2,441 eggs per 100 layers. A dozen eggs brought New York poultry farmers an average of 79 cents per dozen for eggs sold in April, up 16.8 cents from March but down 7.5 cents from April 2008. U.S. egg production totaled 7.46 billion during April 2009, up 1 percent from last year. Production included 6.41 billion table eggs, and 1.05 billion hatching eggs, of which 980 million were broiler-type and 71 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during April 2009 averaged 340 million, down slightly from last year. April egg production per 100 layers was 2,196 eggs, up 2 percent from April 2008. U.S. egg-type chicks hatched during April 2009 totaled 40.6 million, down 4 percent from April 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 35.8 million on May 1, 2009, down 12 percent from a year ago.
