The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 4.10 million, increased 1 percent from May 2008 and the rate of lay increased 1 percent to 2,519 eggs per 100 layers. A dozen eggs brought New York poultry farmers an average of 41.2 cents per dozen for eggs sold in May, down 37.8 cents from April and down 29.6 cents from May 2008. U.S. egg production totaled 7.60 billion during May 2009, up slightly from last year. Production included 6.51 billion table eggs, and 1.09 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.02 billion were broiler-type and 73 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during May 2009 averaged 337 million, down 1 percent from last year. May egg production per 100 layers was 2,256 eggs, up 1 percent from May 2008. U.S. Egg-type chicks hatched during May 2009 totaled 37.8 million, down 10 percent from May 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 36.4 million on June 1, 2009, down 3 percent from a year ago.
