The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 4.08 million, increased 6 percent from July 2008 and the rate of lay increased 1 percent to 2,501 eggs per 100 layers. A dozen eggs brought New York poultry farmers an average of 52 cents per dozen for eggs sold in July, up 10.8 cents from June but down 12.7 cents from July 2008. U.S. egg production totaled 7.59 billion during July 2009, down slightly from last year. Production included 6.51 billion table eggs, and 1.08 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.01 billion were broiler-type and 71 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during July 2009 averaged 333 million, down 1 percent from last year. July egg production per 100 layers was 2,281 eggs, up 1 percent from July 2008. U.S. Egg-type chicks hatched during July 2009 totaled 36.3 million, down 3 percent from July 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 32.8 million on August 1, 2009, up slightly from a year ago.
