The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 4.06 million, increased 4 percent from August 2008 but the rate of lay decreased 3 percent to 2,465 eggs per 100 layers. A dozen eggs brought New York poultry farmers an average of 57.5 cents per dozen for eggs sold in August, up 5.5 cents from July but down 30.8 cents from August 2008. U.S. egg production totaled 7.59 billion during August 2009, up 1 percent from last year. Production included 6.51 billion table eggs, and 1.08 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.00 billion were broiler-type and 72 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during August 2009 averaged 332 million, down 1 percent from last year. August egg production per 100 layers was 2,284 eggs, up 1 percent from August 2008. Egg-type chicks hatched during August 2009 totaled 37.2 million, up 4 percent from August 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 36.5 million on September 1, 2009, up slightly from a year ago.
