E-mail: nass-ny@nass.usda.gov (518) 457-5570 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Onslow Hall Tuesda, March 23, 2010 www.nass.usda.gov/ny NEW YORK EGG PRODUCTION DOWN 2 PERCENT IN FEBRUARY Egg production on New York farms totaled 89 million eggs in February, down 2 percent from last year, according to Stephen Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office. The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 4.03 million, decreased 2 percent from February 2009 and the rate of lay was 2,208 eggs per 100 layers, down 2 percent from last year. U.S. egg production totaled 6.90 billion during February 2010, down slightly from last year. Production included 5.92 billion table eggs, and 983 million hatching eggs, of which 915 million were broiler-type and 68 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during February 2010 averaged 339 million, down 1 percent from last year. February egg production per 100 layers was 2,038 eggs, up 1 percent from February 2009. Egg-type chicks hatched during February 2010 totaled 40.1 million, up 9 percent from February 2009. Eggs in incubators totaled 38.8 million on March 1, 2010, up 4 percent from a year ago.
