The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 3.98 million, decreased 2 percent from July 2009 and the rate of lay decreased slightly to 2,489 eggs per 100 layers. U.S. egg production totaled 7.69 billion during July 2010, up 1 percent from last year. Production included 6.58 billion table eggs, and 1.11 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.04 billion were broiler-type and 72 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during July 2010 averaged 339 million, up 2 percent from last year. July egg production per 100 layers was 2,270 eggs, down slightly from July 2009. U.S. Egg-type chicks hatched during July 2010 totaled 38.1 million, up 5 percent from July 2009. Eggs in incubators totaled 33.4 million on August 1, 2010, up 6 percent from a year ago.
