                 FEBRUARY MILK PRICES DECREASED FROM JANUARY  
 
Prices received by New York producers for milk sold during February
were down from a month earlier, according to Steve Ropel, Director
of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field
Office. The price of wheat, hay, and apples also decreased. The price
of corn and potatoes increased. Many previous month prices were revised
due to more complete sales information. 

Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $16.70 per
hundredweight of milk sold during February, down 10 cents from January
but $4.50 more than February a year ago.   

Grain corn, at $3.78 per bushel, was up 9 cents from January but
decreased 79 cents from last year.  Wheat, at $5.17 per bushel, was
down 38 cents from January and down $1.15 from February a year ago.
Hay averaged $105.00 per ton, down $9 from January and $22 lower than
prices received February 2009.  Potatoes averaged $12.30 per hundredweight,
up 20 cents from January but down $1.40 from last year at this time.
Apples, at 19.9 cents per hundredweight, were down .8 cents from January
and 6.4 cents from last year. 

The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in
February, at 133 percent, based on 1990-92=100, decreased 6 points
(4.3 percent) from January. The Crop Index is down 7 points (4.6 percent)
but the Livestock Index was unchanged. Producers received lower prices
for corn, soybeans, lettuce, and eggs and higher prices for cattle, oranges,
onions, and sweet corn. In addition to prices, the overall index is also
affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities
producers sell. Increased monthly marketings of milk, cattle, broilers, and
strawberries offset decreased marketings of corn, soybeans, wheat, and
