E-mail: nass-ny@nass.usda.gov (518) 457-5570 VEGETABLE REPORT October 2010 Seasonal No. 984-5-10 NEW YORK ONION PRODUCTION DOWN 14 PERCENT New York=s onion crop for 2010 is forecast at 3.67 million hundredweight (cwt.), down 14 percent from last year=s crop of 4.28 million cwt., according to King Whetstone, Director of USDA=s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Office. Harvested acreage is estimated at 10,200 acres, down 1 percent from last year’s acreage of 10,300. Heat and wind, combined with early season wetness and late season dryness resulted in a yield drop for the current year. U.S. SUMMER STORAGE ONION PRODUCTION DOWN 5 PERCENT Summer storage onion production is forecast at 54.7 million hundredweight, down 5 percent from last year. Storage onion harvested area is forecast at 104,470 acres, down 1 percent from 2009. California production, 13.1 million hundredweight, is 9 percent below 2009. Harvested area is expected to total 29,000 acres, down 8 percent from last year.
