U.S. TART CHERRY production is forecast at 190 million pounds, 47 percent below 2009 and 11 percent below production in 2008. New York SWEET CHERRY production is 1,000 tons, 19 percent below the 2009 crop, and 5 percent below 2008. U.S. 2010 SWEET CHERRY production is 313 thousand tons, down 29 percent from 2009, but 26 percent above 2008. APPLES PROCESSED IN NEW YORK PROCESSING PLANTS DOWN 4 PERCENT New York State processing plants utilized 532 million pounds of apples from the 2010 crop, down 4 percent from the 552 million pounds processed from the 2009 crop. Apples shipped into New York for processing totaled 35.3 million pounds, down 20 percent from the 44.3 million pounds received in 2009. Apples utilized for cider and juice in New York plants totaled 236 million pounds. This was 1 percent below last year’s total of 239 million pounds. Processing for canning and applesauce utilized 264 million pounds, down 4 percent from the 276 million pounds canned from the 2009 crop. Included in Other products. 2010 FINAL APPLE PRODUCTION DOWN 7 PERCENT The 2010 New York apple crop totaled 1,270 million pounds, down 7 percent from the 2009 production of 1,370 million pounds. From the 2010 crop, 660 million pounds went to processing plants, at an average of $209 per ton, while 600 million pounds were sold for fresh market at an average packing house door equivalent of $526 per ton or 26.3 cents per pound.
