LIGHT BREED HORSES DOMINATE NEW YORK'S
EQUINE INDUSTRY
The inventory of light
breed horses in New York State totaled 100,500 head on September 1, 2000,
according to the New York Agricultural Statistics Service. This number,
which accounted for 60 percent of the 168,000 total equine in the State,
was down 5 percent from the 1988 light breed total of 105,800 head. Among
the light breeds, Warmbloods, Quarter horses, and Pintos or Paints posted
strong increases, while Arabians, Appaloosas, and crossbreeds showed strong
declines.
The biggest changes in
equine numbers were in draft horse breeds and ponies. The number of draft
horses, at 11,500 head, was up 60 percent from 1988. Sizeable increases
in the number of Belgians and Percherons led the way for this upswing.
Ponies, however, lost the most ground in the equine industry. The number
of ponies was down 32 percent from 1988 to 11,500 head.
Race horse breeds have
shown a marked shift since 1988. The number of Thoroughbreds remained the
same, but the number of Standardbreds fell 41 percent to 11,500 head. Standardbreds
comprised 39 percent of race horse breeds in 1988, but 27 percent on September
1, 2000.
Most breeds have increased
in average value since 1988, with the largest increases in the value of
Thoroughbreds and ponies.
These results are from
the first comprehensive survey of New York's equine industry in 12 years.
The survey is the result of a cooperative effort supported by the New York
State Department of Agriculture and Markets, and the equine industry.
