NEW YORK’S FRUIT FARMS INCREASE

In 2006, the number of vineyards in New York totaled 1,005 compared to 962 in 2001, according to Stephen Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office. This is an increase of 5%. The number of apple farms totaled 697, a slight increase from 2001. The number of farms also increased for peaches, pears, sweet cherries, and tart cherries.

Apples, peaches, pears, tart cherries and sweet cherries all showed decreases in acreage since 2001, while grapes posted an increase.

These additional results are from New York’s 2006 Fruit Tree and Vineyard survey which was last conducted in 2001. The survey was a cooperative effort supported by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and fruit industry specialists.
