U.S. PLANTED ACREAGE OF SPRING ONIONS LOWER

U.S. growers intend to plant 37,700 acres of spring onions for 2002, down 2 percent from 2001 and 9 percent below 2000. Georgia reports a very dry and warm fall which discouraged producers from transplanting onions. Conditions were favorable in California for planting. Harvest in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas is progressing slowly.
