SUMMARY
The 2000 value
of New York tree fruit and grape production totaled $195 million, down
13 percent from the 1999 value, according to the New York Agricultural
Statistics Service. The value, applied only to utilized production, was
below the previous year for all fruits except tart cherries, pears, and
blueberries.
Apple production
was down 17 percent to 1,050 million pounds. McIntosh was again the leading
variety produced in the State, accounting for 22 percent of the total production.
Total grape production decreased 25 percent from 1999 to 154,000 tons.
Tart cherry production totaled 16.6 million pounds, down 2 percent from
the 1999 crop. Pear production was up 16 percent to 14,500 tons, while
peach production was down 17 percent to 12.0 million pounds.
Nationally,
in 2000, New York ranked second in apple production, third in grape production,
and fourth in tart cherry and pear production.
