2003 ANNUAL SUMMARY
The 2003 value of New York tree fruit and grape production totaled $285 million, up 64 percent from the 2002 value, according to the New York Agricultural Statistics Service. The value, applied only to utilized production, was above the previous year for all fruits except tart cherries, grapes and strawberries.
Apple production was up 76 percent to 1.20 billion pounds. Total grape production increased 29 percent from 2002 to 202,000 tons. Tart cherry production totaled 7.2 million pounds, down 43 percent from the 2002 crop. Pear production was up 55 percent to 15,500 tons, while peach production was up 30 percent to 13.0 million pounds.
Nationally, in 2003, New York ranked second in apple production, third in grape production, and fourth in pear production.
