ANNUAL SUMMARY
The
2004 value of New York tree fruit and grape production totaled $219 million,
up 6 percent from the 2003 value, according to the New York Agricultural
Statistics Service. The value, applied only to utilized production, was
above the previous year for all fruits except pears, grapes and blueberries.
Apple
production was up 11 percent to 1.10 billion pounds. Total grape production
decreased 27 percent from 2003 to 145,000 tons. Tart cherry production
totaled 10.7 million pounds, up 45 percent from the 2003 crop. Pear production
was up 6 percent to 16,500 tons, while peach production was down 8 percent
to 6,000 tons.
Nationally,
in 2004, New York ranked second in apple production, third in grape production,
and fourth in pear production.
