E-mail: nass-ny@nass.usda.gov (518) 457-5570 FRUIT REPORT January 2009 Seasonal No. 975-1-09 2008 ANNUAL SUMMARY The 2008 value of New York tree fruit and grape production totaled $347 million, down 6 percent from the 2007 value. The value of utilized production was below the previous year for apples, sweet cherries, pears, and strawberries. Apple production was down 6 percent to 1.23 billion pounds. Total grape production decreased 4 percent from 2007 to 172,000 tons. Tart cherry production totaled 9.6 million pounds, down 15 percent from the 2007 crop. Pear production was down 6 percent to 10,300 tons, and peach production was down 13 percent to 5,500 tons. Nationally, in 2008, New York ranked second in apple production, third in grape production, and fourth in pear production.
