DECEMBER MILK PRODUCTION UP
New York dairy herds produced 1.01 billion pounds of milk during December according to Stephen Ropel, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field office. Milk cows declined from the previous year while milk per cow increased from the previous year resulting in a 2 percent increase in milk production compared to December 2006. The number of milk cows averaged 627 thousand head, down 1 thousand head from December of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,615 pounds, up 35 pounds from the December 2006 rate.
Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $22.20 per hundredweight of milk sold during December, down $0.30 from November and $7.70 above December a year ago.
Milk production in the 23 major States during December totaled 14.4 billion pounds, up 3.1 percent from December 2006. November revised production, at 13.8 billion pounds, was up 3.9 percent from November 2006. The November revision represented an increase of 13 million pounds or 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate.
Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,719 pounds for December, 29 pounds above December 2006. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.38 million head, 107,000 head more than December 2006, and 14,000 head more than November 2007.
