2000 TURKEY PRODUCTION

New York produced 510,000 turkeys during 2000, up 4 percent from 1999. The U.S. total of 270 million turkeys raised during 2000 is down slightly from the 1999 total. Minnesota leads the country in turkeys produced with 43.5 million, followed by North Carolina with 41.0 million head, and Arkansas with 28.0 million.

TURKEY OUTLOOK FOR 2001

Turkey growers in the 20 major producing States intend to raise 1 percent fewer birds in 2001 than they did in 2000. The number of turkeys actually raised in 2001 may vary from growers intentions depending on feed costs, supply of hatching eggs, cost of poults, and prices growers receive for turkeys during the next few months.

NEW YORK EGG PRODUCTION UP 9 PERCENT

Egg production on farms across New York State in November totaled 94 million eggs, up 9 percent, from a year earlier. An increase in the number of layers more than offset the lower rate of lay. Hens being force molted on December 1 were 2.5 percent of the laying flock, while 7.0 percent had completed force molt.

Laying flocks in the United States produced 7.03 billion eggs during November 2000, up slightly from the 7.02 billion produced a year ago. An indication of future egg supply, chicks hatched in the U.S. during November for the purpose of egg production totaled 32.6 million, down 1 percent from a year earlier. Eggs in incubators totaled 32 million on December 1, 2000, up 6 percent from a year ago.
