NEW
YORK HOG INVENTORY REBOUNDS FROM RECORD LOW
Pork
producers in New York had 80,000 hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 2000.
This total was double the 40,000 head on hand a year earlier and 22 percent
above the 1995-1999 average December 1 inventory of 65,400 head.
Of
the current inventory, 10,000 hogs are for breeding purposes, up 67 percent
from the previous December and 2 percent above the 1995-1999 average. The
remaining 70,000 hogs and pigs, raised for home use or the slaughter market,
is 206 percent above a year ago and up 26 percent from the five-year average.
The
1,000 New York hog farms produced a crop of 129,000 pigs during 2000, up
98 percent from a year earlier. Nationally, the 2000 pig crop declined
1 percent from a year earlier to 101 million head.
The
U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on farms as of December 1, 2000 totaled
59.8 million head. This was 1 percent above December 1999, but slightly
below September 1, 2000. Breeding inventory, at 6.28 million head, was
up 1 percent from December 1, 1999. Market hog inventory, at 53.6 million
head, was 1 percent above last year, but slightly below last quarter.
U.S.
hog producers intend to farrow 2.91 million sows during the December 2000-February
2001 quarter, 4 percent above the actual farrowings during the same period
in 2000 and 1 percent above 1999. Intended farrowings for March-May 2001,
at 2.92 million sows, are 1 percent above the same period last year but
2 percent below 1999.

TURKEY PRODUCTION
New
York produced 510,000 turkeys during 2000, up 4 percent from 1999. The
U.S. total of 270 million turkeys raised during 2000 is down slightly from
the 1999 total. Minnesota leads the country in turkeys produced with 43.5
million, followed by North Carolina with 41.0 million head, and Arkansas
with 28.0 million.
TURKEY OUTLOOK FOR
2001
Turkey
growers in the 20 major producing States intend to raise 1 percent fewer
birds in 2001 than they did in 2000. The number of turkeys actually raised
in 2001 may vary from growers intentions depending on feed costs, supply
of hatching eggs, cost of poults, and prices growers receive for turkeys
during the next few months.

YORK DECEMBER MILK PRODUCTION DECREASES
December
milk production in New York totaled 966 million pounds, down 4 percent
from last year. Decreases in both the size of the milking herd and yield
per cow combined to cause the decline.
December
milk production in the 20 major States totaled 11.9 billion pounds, virtually
unchanged from a year earlier. The number of milk cows in the 20 major
States during December 2000 was 81,000 head more than a year earlier.

NEW
YORK EGG PRODUCTION UP 9 PERCENT
Egg
production on farms across New York State in November totaled 94 million
eggs, up 9 percent, from a year earlier. An increase in the number of layers
more than offset the lower rate of lay. Hens being force molted on December
1 were 2.5 percent of the laying flock, while 7.0 percent had completed
force molt.
Laying
flocks in the United States produced 7.03 billion eggs during November
2000, up slightly from the 7.02 billion produced a year ago. An indication
of future egg supply, chicks hatched in the U.S. during November for the
