WINTER WHEAT SEEDINGS

New York producers seeded a total of 125,000 acres of winter wheat in the fall of 2002 for harvest in 2003. This is down 4 percent from the 130,000 acres seeded a year ago.  U.S. winter wheat seeded area for 2003 is expected to total 44.7 million acres, up 6 percent from 2002. This is the largest acreage since 1998.

NEW YORK HAY STOCKS DOWN

New York farms held a total of 2.24 million tons of hay on December 1, 2002, compared with 2.25 million tons on hand December 1, 2001. This is a decrease of 14,000 tons from 2001.  Nationally, hay stocks on farms December 1, 2002 was estimated at 104 million tons. This estimate reflects a 6 percent decrease from last year's 111 million tons. Stock decreases occurred in 33 of the 48 contiguous states.

2002 CORN PRODUCTION DOWN

New York grain corn production totaled 43.7 million bushels in 2002, down 23 percent from 2001's 56.7 million bushels. Acres harvested for grain totaled 450,000, down 17 percent from the 540,000 acres harvested last year. The statewide yield, at 97 bushels per acre, was down 8 bushels from last year.

NEW YORK HOG INVENTORY UP 15 PERCENT

Pork producers in New York had 86,000 hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 2002. This total was up 15 percent from the 75,000 head on hand a year earlier. There were 1,300 operations with hogs in the state during 2002, 100 less than had hogs in 2001.  Of the current inventory, 9,000 hogs are for breeding purposes, unchanged from the previous December. The remaining 77,000 hogs and pigs, raised for home use or the slaughter market, is 17 percent above a year ago.  The New York hog breeders produced a crop of 125,000 pigs during 2002, down 9 percent from a year earlier. Nationally, the 2002 pig crop was basically unchanged from a year earlier at 101 million head.  The U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on farms as of December 1, 2002 totaled 58.9 million head. This was 1 percent below December 2001. Breeding inventory, at 6.01 million head, was down 3 percent from December 1, 2001. Market hog inventory, at 52.9 million head, was 1 percent below last year.  U.S. hog producers intend to farrow 2.81 million sows during the December 2002-February 2003 quarter, 1 percent below the actual farrowings during the same period in 2002 and 2 percent above 2001. Intended farrowings for March-May 2003, at 2.85 million sows, are 3 percent below the same period last year and 1 percent below 2001.

2002 NEW YORK TURKEY
PRODUCTION UP 2 PERCENT

Turkey producers in New York raised 520,000 turkeys during 2002, up 2 percent from both the 2001 and 2000 number raised. The U.S. total of 272 million turkeys raised in 2002, was up fractionally from the 2001 total. North Carolina ranked first in the number raised with 45.5 million, followed by Minnesota with 44.0 million, and Arkansas with 29.5 million.


U.S. TURKEY OUTLOOK FOR 2003

Turkey growers in the 23 major producing States intend to decrease the number of birds raised by 2 percent in 2003. The number of turkeys actually raised in 2003 may vary from growers' intentions depending on feed costs, supply of hatching eggs, cost of poults, and prices growers receive for turkeys during the next few months.

DECEMBER MILK PRODUCTION UP 1 PERCENT


Milk production in the Empire State during December totaled 992 million pounds, up 1 percent from the 979 million pounds of milk produced in New York during December 2001. A larger milk per cow rate was responsible for the increase. The 675,000 dairy cows on farms during December were unchanged from a year earlier. Milk per cow averaged 1,470 pounds during the month, 20 pounds above the December 2001 output.  December milk production in the 20 major producing States totaled 12.2 billion pounds, up 1.8 percent from production in these same States during December 2001. Production per cow in the 20 major States averaged 1,567 pounds for December, 18 pounds above a year earlier. The number of cows on farms was 7.80 million head, 47,000 head more than December 2001, and 6,000 head more than November 2002.

NOVEMBER EGG PRODUCTION UP 1 PERCENT

Egg production on New York farms totaled 91 million eggs in November 2002, 1 percent more than the same month a year earlier. Fewer layers were more than offset with a higher rate of lay. The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 3.83 million, was down 4 percent from November 2001, while the rate of lay was up 5 percent to 23.78 eggs per layer.  Laying flocks in the United States produced 7.25 billion eggs during November 2002, up 1 percent from the previous November. An indication of future egg supply, chicks hatched in the U.S. during November for the purpose of egg production totaled 31.1 million, down 3 percent from November 2001. Eggs in incubators on December 1, 2002 totaled 28.4 million, down 4 percent from the December 1, 2001 total.
