WINTER WHEAT SEEDINGS


New York producers seeded a total of 100,000 acres of winter wheat in the fall of 2003 for harvest in 2004. This is down 23 percent from the 130,000 acres seeded a year ago.


U.S. winter wheat seeded area for 2004 is expected to total 43.5 million acres, down 3 percent from 2003.

NEW YORK HAY STOCKS DOWN


New York farms held a total of 2.43 million tons of hay on December 1, 2003, compared with 2.24 million tons on hand December 1, 2002.


Nationally, hay stocks on farms December 1, 2003 was estimated at 111 million tons. This estimate reflects a 3 percent decrease from last year's 104 million tons. Stock increases occurred in 30 of the 48 contiguous states.

2003 CORN PRODUCTION UP


New York grain corn production totaled 53.2 million bushels in 2003, up 22 percent from 2002's 43.7 million bushels. Acres harvested for grain totaled 440,000, down 2 percent from the 450,000 acres harvested last year. The statewide yield, at a record high 121 bushels per acre, was up 24 bushels from last year.

NEW YORK HOG INVENTORY DOWN 15 PERCENT

 

Pork producers in New York had 73,000 hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 2003. This total was down 15 percent from the 86,000 head on hand a year earlier.

 

Of the current inventory, 9,000 hogs are for breeding purposes, unchanged from the previous December. The remaining 64,000 hogs and pigs, raised for home use or the slaughter market, is 17 percent below a year ago.

 

The New York hog breeders produced a crop of 128,000 pigs during 2003, up 2 percent from a year earlier. Nationally, the 2003 pig crop was down one percent from a year earlier at 100 million head.

 

The U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on farms as of December 1, 2003 totaled 60.0 million head. This was 1 percent above December 2002. Breeding inventory, at 5.97 million head, was down 1 percent from December 1, 2002. Market hog inventory, at 54.1 million head, was 1 percent above last year.

 

U.S. hog producers intend to farrow 2.81 million sows during the December 2003-February 2004 quarter, 1 percent above the actual farrowings during the same period in 2003, but 1 percent below 2002. Intended farrowings for March-May 2004, at 2.85 million sows, are 1 percent below the same period last year and 3 percent below 2002.

2003 NEW YORK TURKEY

PRODUCTION UP 10 PERCENT


Turkey producers in New York raised 570,000 turkeys during 2003, up 10 percent from 2002 and up 11 percent from 2001 number raised. The U.S. total of 274 million turkeys raised in 2003, was up 1 percent from the 2002 total. Minnesota ranked first in the number raised with 45.0 million, followed by North Carolina with 42.5 million, Arkansas and Missouri each with 26.5 million.



U.S. TURKEY OUTLOOK FOR 2004


Turkey growers in the 23 major producing States intend to decrease the number of birds raised by 4 percent in 2004. The number of turkeys actually raised in 2004 may vary from growers' intentions depending on feed costs, supply of hatching eggs, cost of poults, and prices growers receive for turkeys during the next few months.

DECEMBER MILK PRODUCTION DOWN 4 PERCENT


New York dairy herds produced 976 million pounds of milk during December, down 4 percent from the December 2002 level. The decrease was the result of fewer cows and a lower rate per cow. The number of milk cows totaled 657,000 head, down 23,000 head from December of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,485 pounds, 5 pounds less than December 2002.


Milk production in the 20 major states during December totaled 12.3 billion pounds, down slightly from production in these same states during December 2002. Production per cow averaged 1,589 pounds for December, up 14 pounds from December 2002. The number of cows on farms in the 20 major states was 7.71 million head, 93,000 head less than December 2002.

NOVEMBER EGG PRODUCTION DOWN 3 PERCENT


Egg production on New York farms, totaled 88 million eggs in November 2003, down 3 percent from last year. The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 3.73 million, was down 3 percent from November 2002, while the rate of lay was down slightly to 23.62 eggs per layer.

 

Laying flocks in the United States produced 7.28 billion eggs during November 2003, up 1 percent from the previous November. An indication of future egg supply, chicks hatched in the U.S. during November for the purpose of egg production totaled 30.1 million, down 3 percent from November 2002. Eggs in incubators on December 1, 2003 totaled 33.3 million, up 14 percent from previous year.
