nass-ny@nass.usda.gov NEW YORK CROP AND LIVESTOCK REPORT Released: January 2005 Monthly No. 973-1-05 WINTER WHEAT SEEDINGS New York producers seeded a total of 120,000 acres of winter wheat in the fall of 2004 for harvest in 2005. This is up 14 percent from the 105,000 acres seeded a year ago. U.S. winter wheat seeded area for 2005 is expected to total 41.6 million acres, down 4 percent from 2004. New York farms held a total of 1.90 million tons of hay on December 1, 2004, compared with 2.43 million tons on hand December 1, 2003. Nationally, hay stocks on farms December 1, 2004 was estimated at 114 million tons. This estimate reflects a 3 percent increase from last year’s 111 million tons.

2004 CORN PRODUCTION UP New
York grain corn production totaled 61.0 million bushels in 2004, up 15
percent from 2003's 53.2 million bushels. Acres harvested for grain totaled
500,000, up 14 percent from the 440,000 acres harvested last year. The
statewide yield, at a record high 122 bushels per acre, was up 1 bushel
from last year.

producers in New York had 84,000 hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 2004.
This total was up 15 percent from the 73,000 head on hand a year earlier.
Of
the current inventory, 12,000 hogs are for breeding purposes, unchanged
from the previous December. The remaining 72,000 hogs and pigs, raised
for home use or the slaughter market, is 13 percent above a year ago. The
New York hog breeders produced a crop of 166,000 pigs during 2004, up
30 percent from a year earlier. Nationally, the 2004 pig crop was up one
percent from a year earlier at 102 million head. The
U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on farms as of December 1, 2004 totaled
60.5 million head. This was up slightly from December 1, 2003. Breeding
inventory, at 5.97 million head, was down 1 percent from December 1, 2003.
Market hog inventory, at 54.5 million head, was up slightly from last
year, but 2 percent below last quarter. U.S.
hog producers intend to farrow 2.86 million sows during the December 2004-February
2005 quarter, 1 percent above the actual farrows during the same period
in 2004, and 3 percent above 2003. Intended farrowings for March-May 2005,
at 2.87 million sows, are down slightly from the same period in 2004,
and down 1 percent from the same period in 2003. Hog
